Spühler and Zollinger (1), during a systematic investigation of interstitial nephritis, noted a considerable rise in the incidence of this lesion after 1950. They also observed a high frequency of medullary necrosis in their patients with interstitial nephritis that was rarely accompanied by either diabetes or urinary tract obstruction. Aware of an increase in phenacetin consumption in their country, they elicited a history of phenacetin abuse in some of their patients and correlated all these facts to suggest an association between...References1.
