ResumoOsmium/tungsten matrix impregnated cathodes and partially osmium coated B-type cathodes have been studied using numerous analytical techniques. A strong correlation between the formation of an osmium/tungsten alloy and reduced effective work function has been demonstrated. Using this result an improved dispenser cathode has been constructed with an effective work function 0.2 eV lower than conventional B-type emitters.
