Resumo

The famous American chess player Robert “Bobby” Fischer 1944–2008 was the second son of Paul Felix Nemenyi Fig. 1 . This article gives an account on Nemenyi’s life based on biographical facts, archival studies and a talk with Nemenyi’s first son Peter. Nemenyi’s life was significantly influenced by the European history of the twentieth century, resulting in an odyssey in the prewar years, loss of profession, and a difficult private situation. His character influenced both sons Robert “Bobby” Fischer and Peter, a noted professor of statistics. Their lives are not subject of this biographical study, however. In the following, Nemenyi’s biography will be considered first, then his professional impact is discussed, and finally archival material recently found by the author is presented.
