Characterization of Nocardia, Rhodococcus and Gordona Species by in vitro Susceptibility Testing

Representative strains of Cordona, Nocardia and Rhodococcus were tested against 26 antimicrobial agents using the disc diffusion method. A distinct susceptibility profile was noted for most species. Nocardia asteroides, N. brasiliensis, N. otitidiscaviarum, N. transvalensis and N. vaccinii were rarely susceptible to the antibiotics tested; N. brevicatena and N. farcinica varied in their susceptibility depending on the strain tested. Only the antibiotic amikacin was active against all no cardiae. In contrast, the Cordona and Rhodococcus strains showed considerable susceptibility, in particular to the β-lactam antibiotics. Amoxicillin + clavulanic acid and gentamicin were active against all of the gordonae and rhodococci. The differences in susceptibility patterns may prove useful in characterizing the genera Cordona, Nocardia and Rhodococcus and in separating species within these taxa. 40 Stämme von 9 Nocardia-Spezies, 11 Stämme von 8 Rhodococcus-Spezies und 8 Stamme von 3 Gordona-Spezies wurden zu taxonomischen und diagnostischen Zwecken gegen 28 Antibiotika gepruft. Bei den meisten Spezies wurde ein deutliches Empfindlichkeitsmuster festgestellt. Nur in seltenen Fällen waren Verwechslungen möglich, d. h. von N. farcinica und N. asteroides oder N. brasiliensis; C. rubropertincta und C. sputa sowie N. amarae mit C. bronchialis oder C. rubropertinctua. Nur das Antibiotikum Amikacin war gegen aile Nocardia-Stämme wirksam. N. asteroides, N. brasiliensis, N. otitidiscaviarum, N. transvalensis und N. vaccinii zeigten nur selten Empfindlichkeit gegenüber den geprüften Antibiotika. N. brevicatena und N. farcinica scheinen im Hinblick auf ihre Empfindlichkeitsmuster heterogen zu sein. Allgemein waren die Antibiotika gegen Rhodococcus- und Gordona-Spezies viel wirksamer als gegen Nocardia-Spezies. Dies trifft besonders auf β-Lactam- Antibiotika zu. Amoxicillin + Clavulansäure sowie Gentamicin waren gegen alle Rhodococcus- und Gordona-Spezies wirksam. Unterschiede in den Empfindlichkeitsmustern scheinen fur die Charakterisierung dieser drei Genera und Differenzierung zwischen den meisten Spezies dieser Genera von Nutzen zu sein.
