Resumo

A nearly linear relation between the Fano factor and the ratio W/I, where W is the mean energy required to form an ion pair in a gas, is semi-empirically found. Deviations from the linear relation are observed for very low incident energies. The relation F=a(W/I)+b is tested on several examples. The proposed relation may be used to estimate the Fano factor for gases and gas mixtures for which only the W value is known.
