Twenty-six of the species of Fossombronia listed in the Index Hepaticarum are ten- tatively accepted as good species. Taxonomic notes are given for 63 taxa and micrographs of spores for 18. The following reductions to synonymy are made: F. caledonica Steph. and F. macrocalyx Steph. to F. papillata; F. crassifolia Spruce and F. tenuifolia Spruce to F. pusilla; F. fernandeziensis Steph., F. forsythii Steph. and F. hamato-hirta Steph. to F. wondraczekii; F. mexicana Steph. to F. texana; and F. occidento-africana Arnell to F. indica. In the course of an investigation of Australian species of the genus Fossombronia (Scott & Pike 1984, 1987a,b,c, 1988) we have studied type ma- terial of as many species as possible and we record here a number of names which are, in our view, conspecific with others. Except where otherwise stated, type material is likely to be isotype in almost all cases but we have generally refrained from des- ignating lectotypes since there are some herbaria, notably Paris, whose holdings we have been unable to study.
