Resumo1. Investigation of the formation of thyroxine as a product of the oxidation of diiodotyrosine by hydrogen peroxide in the presence of horseradish peroxidase (donor: H2O2 oxidoreductase, EC 1.11.1.7.) revealed that thyroxine could be obtained in a net yield of 15%. 2. The methods for identification of thyroxine included ultraviolet, visible, and infrared spectral analysis, elementary analysis, and paper chromatography. The effect of the compound upon the metamorphosis of tadpoles was compared with that of authentic thyroxine. 3. The net yield was determined by the use of the isotope dilution technique. 4. The results were discussed with respect to the formation of thyroxine in vivo.
