Resumo

The diversity of traditional peoples and communities has received considerable attention on the national level in Brazil. Here, indigenous and maroon (quilombolas) communities have already been highlighted for a very long time, however, more recently also other peoples and communities have been focused, like those of the Faxinais in the Araucaria Forest areas of the Southern Brazilian State of Paraná.In this research, we investigate how these groups insert themselves into the Brazilian social space. Therefore, our re ections are based on theoretical considerations proposed by Tönnies, Weber and Giddens on the relationship between communities e societies. From such a perspective, Faxinal communities maintain, on one hand, fragments of long-term traditions, but demonstrate on the other hand exible adaptations to external and modernizing processes of their society. As such, they maintain simultaneously, but also contradictorily values which are embedded in interactions as an external and cultural expressions as individual relationship of a speci c group. Thus, they adapt their social structure to the context of a modern society.
