The management of pneumocystis pneumonia in patients with AIDS has been greatly enhanced in the past 3 years by the recognition that the diagnosis can be established rapidly and noninvasively by examining induced sputum samples: sensitivity of sputum examination in this patient population has increased from 55% to 92% in reported data (1-3).
