Resumo

Four of seven children with postnatal CMV infection were found to excrete CMV for prolonged periods of time ranging from 7 to 38 months. The incidence of CMV infection among 66 children over a time interval of 47.8 months was 19 per cent. Prevalence of CMV excretion determined at 39 months of age in this group was 8 per cent. Prolonged excretion of CMV among those children infected appeared to account for the high prevalence. The excretion characteristics of this agent undoubtedly play an important role in its ubiquitous occurrence.
