Resumo

An analysis was made of 1323 computer sciences majors who enrolled at Purdue University from 1978 to 1981 to determine what factors can be used to predict success or lack of success in this major. The results indicate that strength in both mathematical and verbal skills is necessary if one is to progress satisfactorily through this strong academic program. A large percentage of academically qualified people do not complete their major in computer sciences. Apparently, the time, attention to detail, systematic thinking and the impersonal interaction with machines are activities of the profession which many people find undesirable.
