ResumoCharles-Marie de la Condamine, born in Paris on Jan. 28, 1701, speculated on the feasibility of inoculation against smallpox long before Edward Jenner successfully introduced it. In his youth, la Condamine had contracted smallpox, an experience that may have influenced him to take a strong stand in the debate about inoculation.
