ResumoThe X-ray fluorescence technique was applied to zinc phosphate coating deposited on cold rolled steel surface. The calibration plot of the intensity ratio of zinc Kα to iron Kα against the surface density gave a linear relationship where the amount of iron dissolution at the beginning of the phosphating process was obtained. A thickness of about 671±203 Å of iron dissolution was deduced from the linear plot. A linear relationship could also be established between the intensity ratio and the coating thickness. The X-ray fluorescence technique also proved to be a rapid, non-destructive and accurate technique for measuring the thickness of thin coatings.
