Resumo

A multi-causal and interdisciplinary analysis of land use changes in Kitulwatte, a tropical Sri Lankan highland village, is provided. Based on ethnographic research, sociological, hydrological and agro-ecological aspects of pine plantations, vegetable cash crop cultivation and human settlement expansion are investigated. Resource competition and land degradation have caused water scarcity, which adversely affects crop cultivation, household production and human health. To cope, villagers mobilize resources through the political system and development agencies. The resolution of Kitulwatte's water crisis remains constrained by unequal power relations between villagers and foresters, population growth and the requirements of a competitive cash economy.
