Resumo

406 samples were taken of the surficial 3 cms of sediment from Lake Superior in 1973. A description of these samples together with the interpretation of continuous echo-sounding records resulted in a description of the surface sediment distribution which is interpreted in the light of the glacial and postglacial evolution of the lake basin. Samples were analysed for grain size, Eh, pH, Organic and Inorganic carbon. These parameters are described and related to the modern depositional environment. Eh, pH and organic carbon reflect the current nature of the lake as being oxic, and oligotrophic with low primary productivity. Grain size parameters show distributional trends related to water depth indicating progradahon from coarse to fine materials as a function of increasing water depth.
