ResumoScattering by buried metal or dielectric objects have beensolved by the unimoment method and the T-matrix method. The T-ma-trix method is limited to inhomogeneity of the medium of the layeredvariety, so it cannot be applied to the partly buried scatterer. The uni-moment method, using finite element in the inhomogeneous part, solvesthe partly buried problem with no fundamental difficulty. This paperpresents the adaptation of the unimoment method to the partly buriedscattering problem. An automatic mesh generation strategy and a spe-cial boundary function set on the unimoment sphere are discussed indetail. These are the key additions to the prior work that make thesolutions to the partly buried problems possible. The computed resultsare numerically checked, indicating good stability. The method can beapplied to investigate geological exploration problems, where the de-posits rise above the surface, it may also be applied to investigate theeffects on measured fields due to nearby hills or valleys.
