Resumo

1. Only the threads of Mytilacea contain collagen. 2. In Anomia, whose byssus is calcified, the acidic amino acids prevail over the basis ones. Glucosamine is very abundant. 3. Great differences are found between the species with reduced or little functional byssus (Heterodonta) and the species with well-developed and efficient ones (Pteriomorpha). In the first group, histidine appears but at very low level whereas aspartic acid as well as sulphur amino acids are much more abundant than in the second group. Biochemical modification have gone with the development and the adaptation of the byssus.
