ResumoAccurate longitudinal optical mode frequencies have been determined for a variety of polycrystalline inorganic materials employing simple specular reflectance techniques with polarized i.r. radiation. Longitudinal optical and transverse optical frequencies determined for ZnO, CaO, MgO, NaNO3 and NaClO3 are in excellent agreement with literature values. The methods employed should be generally applicable to polycrystalline inorganic and organic materials.
