ResumoTowards a bright future: Take a look at the achievements and new features introduced in 2013 (Cover Profiles), and what′s new for 2014 (author interviews and the Early Career Series). A bright future not only aptly describes ChemPlusChem, which continues to highlight truly multidisciplinary science from top groups worldwide in where the articles published contain new results derived from at least two subfields of chemistry (or one of chemistry and another scientific discipline such as biology, medicine, or physics), but also describes a number of early career scientists that will be featured prominently in the journal during the coming year. ChemPlusChem has filled a niche for papers that were otherwise considered “too specialized” by some general chemistry journals. This issue is no exception and is packed with great reading; board members Eiji Yashima and Luisa De Cola describe supramolecular organogels (page 35) and energy transfer at zeolite L boundaries (page 45), respectively. Meanwhile, hot papers from the groups of José M. López-de-Luzuriaga on AuI–SnII complexes (page 67), Claudia Tomasini on hybrid foldamers (page 114), Claire Carmalt on spinel oxide films (page 122), and Silvia Cavalli on conjugates for photodynamic therapy (page 90) make this a must-read issue. In the last year ChemPlusChem received articles from 42 nations with the top ten submitting countries (significant increases are given) being China (+19%), France (+27%), Germany, India (+17%), Italy (+13%), Japan, Portugal, Singapore (+33%), USA, and UK (submissions doubled). Overall there has been 33% growth in published papers. The quality of service offered through professional peer review and speedy processing of manuscripts is reflected in the increasing number of authors coming back time-and-again to publish top quality papers. Likewise, authors have embraced the journal′s fully electronic platform and taken advantage of the free color to enhance the presentation of their results. The broad spectrum of topics covered by the journal is illustrated in the newly generated “Tag Cloud”, which incorporates the top 50 most frequent keywords used within the journal. 1 An interactive version of the Tag Cloud is available on our homepage, just click on any keyword and go directly to the articles. It will be exciting to see how the Tag Cloud evolves and changes over the coming years according to hot research trends. To enhance visibility for our cover authors, Cover Profiles were introduced last year. This feature gives groups and collaborators a chance to showcase their research and upcoming developments. It has been well received and is something authors and readers of ChemPlusChem look forward to reading. In this issue the profile showcases collaborators from Spain and New Zealand. The groups of Carlos González and Vyacheslav V. Filichev share with us their “plan to elucidate the structural basis of the interaction of these fluorescent compounds with different nucleic acids motifs”. 1 All our Cover Profiles are free to view so please feel free to browse them on the homepage (http://www.chempluschem.org). ChemElectroChem, the newest member of the ChemPubSoc Europe family of journals, has its inaugural issue in January 2014. This journal covers the entire scope of pure and applied electrochemistry and it becomes the 11th journal in the ChemPubSoc family. 1 The co-chairs are Bing-Wei Mao (Xiamen University), Jean-Marie Tarascon (Université de Picardie), and Wolfgang Schuhmann (Ruhr-Universität Bochum) who is also a valued member of the ChemPlusChem board. Among the other members of the family, ChemCatChem is moving to fully digital and will also have Cover Profiles, joining ChemSusChem. ChemPlusChem published a special issue in 2013 dedicated to the memory of Detlef Schröder, and it was guest-edited by Zdenĕk Havlas (Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic). Detlef was a founding member of the Editorial Board and an avid supporter of the journal. The size of the issue is a testament to how many co-workers and colleagues wanted to honor him. Along with overwhelming feedback from the authors, the issue was free to view for several weeks to coincide with the 14th European Symposium on Organic Reactivity (ESOR 2013), and at which a special half-day memorial session was organized to remember Detlef. Throughout last year I visited academic institutions and attended several conferences and spoke to many enthusiastic supporters of the journal. In Münster (Germany) the local organizers of the 2nd German Symposium on Supramolecular Chemistry, Pol Besenius and Bart Jan Ravoo, hosted a marvelous two-day symposium. ChemPlusChem was pleased to collaborate in producing the book of abstracts and awarding a prize for the best poster; congratulations to Malte Hansen (Universität Regensberg, Germany) for his well-deserved win. In April I attended the Spring ACS meeting in New Orleans, which provided an excellent opportunity to meet several board members and forge new relationships with many attendees. Later in the year I was invited to the Biennial Meeting of the Royal Spanish Chemical Society (RSEQ) in Santander (Spain), where it was a great pleasure to cooperate closely with the president of RSEQ and board member, Jesús Jiménez-Barbero (Centro de Investigaciones Biologicas) and local organizer Angel Irabien (Universidad de Cantabria) and his team. I congratulate N. Padial (Universidad de Granada) who won the best poster prize sponsored by ChemPlusChem. From 2014 all Communications, like the Full Papers, will contain an abstract in which the motivation for the work, the methods applied, the results, and the conclusions drawn are presented. The abstract should contain several keywords or key phrases to aid the discoverability of the paper online. As part of an initiative to feature up and coming researchers whose focus is on multidisciplinary research centering on chemistry we have started the Early Career Series. The corresponding authors of the papers featured have been nominated by ChemPlusChem board members and are considered to be highly talented researchers who are in the early stages of their careers and will shape the future of interdisciplinary research in chemistry and its related disciplines. Invitees whose papers are judged by referees to be highly important or very important will be selected to give an interview intended to highlight their research career. Contributions and interviews will appear throughout issues of ChemPlusChem, and papers will be denoted with a special icon.1 To launch the Early Career Series, this issue includes three articles and one interview. In the Communications section, Petr Cigler (nominated by Michal Hocek) outlines an approach for the surface modification of nanodiamonds with a layer of methacrylate copolymer to enable attachment of molecules by click chemistry. This work is featured on the back cover and in the accompanying interview discusses his inspirations as a young scientist and his multidisciplinary approach to research. Meanwhile, in another Communication T. Govindaraju (nominated by Govindasamy Mugesh) describes the synthesis and structural evaluation of novel cyclic peptidomimetic scaffolds as well as testing of these molecules as autophagy modulators. Among the Full Papers, Radim Beranek (nominated by Wolfgang Schuhmann) reports a simple way to prepare surface-modified TiO2 compounds and their photocatalytic activity and discusses the formation/reaction mechanism of these compounds. To view these and forthcoming articles in the complete Early Career Series, visit: http://chempluschem.org/earlycareer. And soon you will be able to download the ChemPlusChem iPad App, on Wiley Online Library enhance your reading experience through the new online Anywhere Article format, find us on Facebook, and sign up for Twitter feeds. Stay tuned to our homepage where these forthcoming developments will be announced. Also in the pipeline is the launch of our new manuscript submission system, Editorial Manager, which will help speed up the decision-making process and facilitate transfers between journals. This system has already been successfully implemented by the materials journals in our group, and a similar smooth transition is anticipated for us in February. I sign off for the moment by sincerely thanking our authors, tireless referees, and enthusiastic board members for supporting ChemPlusChem. I look forward to meeting more of you in the coming months and receiving your top multidisciplinary submissions in our inbox! 1 Dr. Marisa Spiniello Deputy Editor 1
