ResumoHand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), characterized by fever and vesicular exanthema on hands and feet and in the mouth, has emerged as the leading cause of viral encephalitis in children.1 It poses heavy economic and public health burden in most Asian countries, especially in China, where millions of cases occurred annually.2 The most predominant causative agents associated with HFMD are human enterovirus type 71 (EV71) and coxsackievirus A16 (CVA16), which alternatively circulated in different areas.
