Resumo

Painters Jan Brueghel the Elder and Jacopo Bassano did not just share initials. They were both praised by the archbishop of Milan, Cardinal Federico Borromeo, who compared them in his Musaeum (1625). This article considers the cardinal's art collection, which included paintings by these two artists. It argues that Bassano was understood as a model for the Flemish painter, even though the latter was a generation younger than his Italian peer. This paper analyses and compares their works in relation to Borromeo's theory of art as expressed in the Musaeum. Particular attention is given to Brueghel's Element of Earth (Musée du Louvre, Paris) and Bassano's Season of Spring (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna) with specific reference to the vignettes showing Adam and Eve in the background of both paintings. An iconological reading of such a telling detail reveals how both painters employed a common visual strategy, here termed a surplus of visual accuracy.
