More than 50% of patients with AIDS develop P. carinii pneumonia, and despite therapy more than 16% die with overwhelming infection. Several studies have shown that the combination of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole is effective in the treatment and prevention of P. carinii infection (1, 2). However, its use in patients with AIDS has been associated with a high incidence of adverse reactions (3). The report of Hardy and colleagues (4) that Fansidar (sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine; Hoffmann-LaRoche Inc., Nutley, New Jersey) taken once...References1. HUGHES W, MCNABB P, and MAKRES P.
