Resumo

Abstract The sheath forming the outer layer of the egg capsule of the squid Loligo opalescens is an acellular matrix 1–2 mm thick which contains approximately 100 striations parallel to the capsule surface. Throughout this matrix is suspended a dense culture of bacteria arranged in one to five layers. The probable source of these bacteria is the accessory nidamental gland.
