Resumo

1. The evolution of metabolic pathways, and of the enzymes concerned in them, are discussed. 2. The pathways may have evolved backwards, but in many cases it seems more likely that the enzymes were not derived from the enzyme that catalysed the last stage. 3. Enzymes that catalyse the same type of reaction, however, may well be derived from a common precursor. 4. The route from one enzyme to another probably involves a minimal change in conformation.
