“Hearing Ghosts and Speaking Spaces” is both an account of a performance, now almost two years past, and an attempt to give voice to performance space itself. In effect, our purpose is to excavate the lived phenomenon of an encounter with theatrical space from the grave of theatrical transience. We argue here not only for the primacy of space in constructing meaning in performance, but also for the catalytic ability of performance to allow spaces to speak, even if that speech is a cacophony of voices.
