Resumo

We discuss methods for estimating the cross section for the associated production of charmed particles in photon-hadron or hadron-hadron collisions. Charm is here assumed to be the new quantum number carried by the constituents of the ψ(3095) and ψ(3684). We estimate the charmed quark distribution function to be related to that of the strange quark by c(x)≅0.2s(x)(X 2±1), and we estimate the production of charmed pairs in pp collisions. σD≅0.1 exp[−26mD√s] ln(s4M2D)mb(X 2±2). These values are not the results of a single model calculation but occur if we require simple interpretation of existing data or some measure of theoretical consistency.
