ResumoThe article analisys how the Fisrt Republic in Portugal (1910-1926) defended and implemented the thesis of a secular and modern Government. However, “the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima” were used by the Church to counter the liberal ideas odf the State and, later, Fatima supported Salazar and condemned communism. Religion was used to convince people to support the Estado Novo (1933-1974), which in turn defended colonialism overseas in order to expropriate their wealth.
