ResumoThis article compares theories of knowledge and strategies for cultural transmission implicit in Pohnpei and American models of education. Imposition of the American educational system with scientific principles and democratic ideals has transformed the Pohnpei chiefdom by creating a new elite that differs in composition, content of expertise, and evaluation of persons and knowledge. The new elite has crossed over into the traditional system, introducing new material goods and ideas, and even changing Pohnpei traditions.
