Summary Early stages of immunity after inoculation of pigs with a foot‐and‐mouth disease DEAE dextran vaccine Inoculation of pigs with a foot‐and‐mouth disease DEAE dextran vaccine Inoculation of pigs with a foot‐and‐mouth disease DEAE dextran vaccine against virus type 0 1 produced within four days considerable protection against experimental infection with the homologous virus. A single animal among 10 vaccinated pigs developed a rudimentary vesicle on one leg. The situation was equally satisfactory after the following test infections, which took place in a period between one and four weeks after vaccination. Of 40 vaccinated pigs only two developed lesions and these were confined to a single limb and in one case only was there a rudimentary vesicle. Résumé Stades précoces de l'immunité après vaccination de porcs avec un vaccin DEAE‐dextrane contre la fièvre aphteuse En vaccinant des porcs avec un vaccin anti‐aphteux DEAE‐dextrane, contre le sous‐type viral 0 1 , on est parvenu à induire en quatre jours une protection étendue contre une infection expérimentale par contact avec un virus homologue. Un seul des dix animaux vaccinés a développé un aphte rudimentaire à une extêmité. La situation est également favorable après les infections tests suivantes, qui ont eu lieu de une à quatre semaines post vacc. Sur les 40 porcs vaccinés, deux animaux furent atteints de la maladie, chacun à une extrêmité, avec, dans un cas seulement, la formation d'un aphte rudimentaire. Resumen Estadios inmunitarios precoces tras inmunización de cerdos con una vacuna antiaftosa DEAE‐dextrano Mediante la inyección de cerdos con una vacuna antiaftosa adicionada de DEAE‐dextrano frente al subtipo de virus 0 1 se pudo inducir en el plazo de cuatro días una protección amplia contra una infección experimental de contacto con virus homólogo. Solo uno de diez animales vacunados desarrolló una afta rudimentaria en una extremidad. Favorables, de forma semejante, eran las circunstancias después de las infecciones de prueba siguientes, efectuadas en un espacio de tiempo de una a cuatro semanas post vacc. Aquí enfermaron en total dos animales entre cuarenta cerdos vacunados en una extremidad cada vez, apareciendo en un caso sólo una formación rudimentaria de aftas. Zusammenfassung Durch Impfung von Schweinen mit einer MKS‐DEAE‐Dextran‐Vakzine gegen Virussubtyp 0 1 konnte innerhalb vier Tagen ein weitgehender Schutz gegen eine experiementelle Kontaktinfektion mit homologem Virus induziert werden. Lediglich eines von zehn vakzinierten Tieren entwickelte eine rudimentäre Aphthe an einer Extremität. Ähnlich günstig waren die Verhältnisse nach den folgenden Testinfektionen, die in einem Zeitraum von einer bis vier Wochen post vacc. stattfanden. Insgesamt erkrankten hierbei von vierzig vakzinierten Schweinen zwei Tiere an jeweils einer Extremität, wobei in einem Fall lediglich eine rudimentäre Aphthenbildung auftrat.
