Professor Eric Voegelin graciously acceded to my request that he respond publicly to Thomas J. J. Altizer's review-essay appearing in this issue of JAAR. In my view, Professor Voegelin's monumental oeuvre has not received the attention in North America which it richly deserves, especially among scholars of religion(s). My solicitation of Professor Altizer's essay and Professor Voegelin's response to it represents a first step toward redress of that situation. In the future, JAAR will devote some of its review space to works and authors whose significance for religious studies, for whatever reasons, has only lately dawned. And as in the present case, we shall not be stodgy about format. Professor Voegelin wanted his communication with JAAR's readership to take the form of a letter. Need such a venerable form be justified to scholars of religion? R.L.H.
