Resumo

ABSTRACTCentral to the analysis of film stardom are three key concepts: the simultaneous accessibility and inaccessibility of the actor (Morin), the creation of a narrative that unites the on-screen persona with the off-screen life (DeCordova), and the negotiation of contradictions through the charismatic (Dyer). While the foundational work of star studies was developed in relationship to Hollywood stars, a considerable body of work has developed on French actors and on the specificities of French stardom. Important studies of a range of French female stars, from Arletty to Simone Signoret to Catherine Deneuve, have explored how these women embody both anxieties and fantasies of French female identity, how they represent particular notions of French identity as well as the nation itself, and how they embody contradictions between autonomy and independence within the confines of a culture and a cinematic industry dominated by men.
