Resumo

The principal finallity of this study was of survey, informing about the chemical composition of rivers of part of the Paraná basin. It was also wished to characterize the waters of rivers which drain tropical and sub-tropical regions. The results of the chemical analyses of the major, minor and trace elements of nine rivers (Sucuriu, Verde, Pardo, Paranaíba, Grande, Tietê, Paranapanema, Paraná and Pelotas) of the Paraná basin, are presented. The results were related with the lithology, seazonal variations, discharge and pH. From these results the following conclusions were obtained. The lithology and the soil, area among the principal factors which control the quality and partly the quantity of dissolved material transported by the waters of rivers;there is a variation in the quantity of dissolved material with the seazonal variations; the quantity of dissolved material is greater when the discharge is at maximum. The waters herewith studied, can be classified as carbonated waters wich characterize rivers of tropical and sub-tropical climates.
