Resumo

This essay examines how Elizabeth Cady Stanton, in one of her most popular lyceum lectures, promoted revolutionary reforms in parenting and education in a forum that constrained political and social controversy. In "Our Boys," Stanton rejected patriarchal discipline, celebrated androgynous virtues, criticized organized religion, and envisioned radical changes in American education. With entertaining stories, motherly advice, and a patriotic celebration of America's promise, however, she softened the edges of a lecture that otherwise might have been too polemical for the postwar lyceum.
