ResumoI note with interest the discussion by Jørgensen and Rasmussen [2006] on Adam Paulsen's work in the late nineteenth century To understand why this work was not fully appreciated at the time it was being conducted, it should be realized that the emphasis then was on such topics as the relationship between aurora and solar activity, their geographic distribution, and spectroscopic studies such as those by Hermann Karl Vogel and Johann Karl Friedrich Zollner on the red auroral line. The problem of cathode rays and related matters was also being discussed widely, for example, by Eugen Goldstein and Emil Wiechert.
