ResumoEvery human interaction involves “psychodynamic issues.” To attempt to address all of those that arise in the complex context of a psychiatric emergency service (PES) is an impossible task. This article describes some general principles of psychodynamic interviewing that are indispensable to interviewing all patients and patients with psychiatric emergencies in particular. Some of the advantages offered by these additions to the emergency psychiatrist's armamentarium are explained, and several frequently encountered clinical situations are described, demonstrating how a psychodynamically informed interview can enhance clinical outcomes.
