ResumoGuidobaldo II Della Rovere, from 1538 until his death in 1574 duke of Urbino, so increased taxes that his Urbino citizens revolted in January 1571, provoking harsh repression. This book by a distinguished musicologist provides an original and important contribution, with much new information on music and spectacle (principally carnivals) within the duchy of Urbino (save for two in Venice) during the duke's lifetime. His volume is in two parts; the first, headed ‘Life, cultural aspirations and patronage’, is a chronologically presented analysis of how shifting international politics on the Italian peninsula determined and curtailed Guidobaldo's actions. The crucial factor was that the duke held his state as a papal fief: he could be dispossessed on a papal whim, as was forced home on his very accession to Urbino in 1538, when he was deprived of the duchy of Camerino; shortly afterwards that same pope did not appoint him Prefect...
