ISBN 978-0-7636-3109-3 $14.99 R 18–36 months A baby bird wants to fly “‘Way up high!’ So the mama helps the baby bird flip flap fly.” A page turn shows baby bird flying “where the wind blows whish. ‘Look!’ cheeps the baby bird. ‘I see a . . . ,’” while a hint of golden tail in a blue pond indicates the missing word is “fish,” confirmed by another page turn. The little fish wants to swim (“splish splash swim”) and spies a snake, and so on, until a baby mouse spies a baby child (“So the mama and the baby child kiss like this . . . ”); the child then points out that there are “babies everywhere!” as the entire cast of baby critters reassembles on the last page. Toddlers will love the guessing-game format (which is at just the right level of difficulty for little ones) and the bouncy rhyming text, and they will easily relate to the baby animals’ desires to get moving. Adult readers-aloud will appreciate the sonority and originality of Root’s word choices (the baby fish doesn’t just speak, he “blurps,” while the otter slides “sloop slop slide”) and the unfaltering rhythm. Walker’s acrylic illustrations are sweetly simple, with dot-eyed, rounded animals cavorting against slightly smudgy, uncluttered backgrounds. Edges are highlighted with brushy outlines in contrasting colors, which gives the cheerful pictures some heft and focus. This would be great for both toddler storytimes and one-on-one snuggle sessions, and it would also make a fine gift book. Copyright © 2009 The Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois
