Resumo

Abstract Two species of dinoflagellate cysts, Umbriadinium mediterraneense gen. et sp. nov. and Valvaeodinium hirsutum sp. nov. occur in the Lower Jurassic (lower Toarcian) of the Tethyan Realm. Umbriadinium mediterraneense exhibits a suessiacean paratabulation with eight to nine paraplate series and a disintegration type combination archeopyle. Valvaeodinium hirsutum is a species characterised by small size and ornamented by numerous non‐tabular spines arising from the autophragm. The two new species are confined to the Tethyan Realm, where they are reliable biomarkers for the lower Toarcian.
