ResumoFlow visualizations in a high Reynolds number, Mach 3, fully developed turbulent boundary layer indicate that the upper half of the boundary layer is populated with elongated longitudinal structures. These structures are robust with considerable streamwise but very limited spanwise extent, and are randomly distributed in space and time. Possible mechanisms for the generation of these structures are discussed.
