ResumoElectronic Raman spectra have been observed of trivalent rare-earth ions doped in the host-lattice yttrium gallium garnet (YGaG). The transitions terminate on the Stark level of the 2F7/2 manifold of Yb:YGaG, 7F1 levels of Eu:YGaG and the first excited state of Nd:YGaG. From an intensity study it can be concluded that the most important contributions to the Raman transition moment of the electronic Raman lines arise from the matrix elements 〈(4f)n |μ| (4f)n−15d〉.
