However, a large proportion of men in the community with LUTS remain undiagnosed and the data on their quality of life is scarce. We aim to compare the quality of life between men with LUTS, unreported LUTS and those not having LUTS. METHODS We conducted a community-based cross sectional study in 2008. Participants aged ≥ 40 years old from the original cohort of 1046 men in the 2006 men′s health survey and local community in Subang were invited to participate. The participants completed a series of questionnaires with assistance on demographic characteristics, a question on whether they have LUTS, the International Prostate Symptom Score questionnaire and generic QoL scale (SF-12). Men with LUTS comprised self-reported LUTS and unreported LUTS. Unreported LUTS were men who did not self-report LUTS but had IPSS score ≥ 8. Men without LUTS were those who did not self-report LUTS and had IPSS score ≤ 7. RESULTS 1007 men completed the survey, consisting of 52.5% Chinese men, 22.9% Malay and 21.8% Indian. Mean age was 56.6±8.3 years. The prevalence of LUTS was 33.4% of which 11.4% were self-reported LUTS and 22.0% were unreported LUTS. The physical health composite scores (PCS) and mental health composite scores (MCS) in men with self-reported LUTS (44.5 and 40.1 respectively) and unreported LUTS (44.6 and 39.5 respectively) were lower than men without LUTS (46.4 and 42.0 respectively) (F2,1001=9.3, p<0.001 and F2,1001=13.8, p<0.001 respectively). All 8 QoL sub-scale scores in SF-12 were significantly lower in unreported LUTS compare to men without LUTS. CONCLUSIONS Men with unreported LUTS have poorer QoL than men without LUTS and their QoL was as poor as men with self-reported LUTS. Hence, it is important to screen aging men for unreported LUTS in order to offer treatment opportunity. © 2010 by American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetails Volume 183Issue 4SApril 2010Page: e631-e632 Advertisement Copyright & Permissions© 2010 by American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.MetricsAuthor Information Hui-Meng Tan Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia More articles by this author Seng Fah Tong Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia More articles by this author Ee Ming Khoo Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia More articles by this author Wah Yun Low Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia More articles by this author Boon Cheok Lee Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia More articles by this author Verna Kar Mun Lee Selangor, Malaysia More articles by this author Chirk Jenn Ng Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia More articles by this author Expand All Advertisement Advertisement PDF downloadLoading ...
