ResumoThe interaction of particles with certain cell surface receptors initiates intracellular signalling pathways that ultimately lead to submembranous actin filament assembly, pseudopod extension, and the ingestion of the particles. Here, Steven Greenberg reviews recent evidence implicating various signalling events in phagocytosis--in particular, activation of tyrosine kinases and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase--and speculates how they might regulate the actin cytoskeleton.
