Resumo

A Föhn wind blowing off-shore produces super-refraction at radio frequencies. This results in the guiding of very high frequency radio waves beyond the horizon in a radio duct close to the sea surface. The problems involved and the experimental techniques adopted in a long term investigation of this phenomenon are described, and selected data are discussed. Field observations are presented in the form of isopleths of the relevant meteorological quantities and of modified refractive index over the area under investigation, together with contours of radio field strength for wavelengths of 300 cm., 60 cm, 10 cm. and 3 cm., corresponding to the particular meteorological situations described.
