At the beginning of the 1st C. A.D., the creation of the Trade street shows the expansion of the extra-muros district of Saint-Romain-en-Gal. The development of this area began during the augustan period near the River Rhône, slightly above the antique centre of Vienne (Isère), on an alluvial plain already surveyed. Towards the middle of the 1st C., the street is equipped with a public main sewer, construction which is in close connection with the development of the west side of the road. In particular, we note the emergence of the maison au Grand Péristyle. This residence possesses a building devoted to trade that will constitute the frame of the maisons au Bassin Excentré, created in the middle of the 2nd C., and aux Cinq Mosaïques that suceeds it at the end of the same century. At this time, the Trade street's roadway is paved with big granite block and bordered, on the west side, with a stone-built pavement. No new transformations happen before the disuse of this district in the course of the 3rd C.
