ResumoRate enhancing specific ion effects have been detected in 2.3 M and 5.0 M H 2 SO 4 for the reaction [Formula: see text]. These effects can be related to the hydration numbers of the added ions. This suggests a Bascombe and Bell type of interpretation for the overall twelfth power rate dependence of the above reaction on the sulfuric acid concentration in the reaction medium; the chloride–chlorate reaction acts as a "chemical amplifier" for hydration effects.
