ResumoAbstract Membrane-bound ribosomes and free ribosomes from rabbit liver have been compared in cell-free protein synthesis. In contrast to free ribosomes, membrane-bound ribosomes show a lesser requirement for added KCl, a reduced ratio of endogenous messenger to poly U dependent protein synthesis, and a preference for membrane ribosomal wash for stimulation of endogenous messenger translation. These results suggest that, in addition to the differences in product observed by various investigators, membrane-bound ribosomes may differ from free cytoplasmic ribosomes in their functional properties in cell-free protein synthesis.
