Abstract We have measured the spatial power spectrum of the faint fluctuations of the nightsky brightness due to distant clusters of galaxies. This spectrum depends strongly on the luminosity density of the Universe and on the covariance structure of the galaxy distribution. Based on the luminosity function for nearby galaxies, we obtain a density contrast p2 / = 29 for galaxy clustering at a correlation length 1 = 1 Mpc.
