Born and educated in Canada, his career bridged three nations and two continents. At the youthful age of 25, he became Professor of the Institutes of Medicine of McGiIl University. In 1884, with a reputation already firmly established, he moved to Philadelphia to accept the chair of Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
