Resumo

Abstract Spin trapping experiments have provided evidence for formation of the sulfite radical anion (SO3−) as an intermediate in the chloroplast-catalyzed oxidation of bisulfite ion. Formation of SO3− is inhibited by superoxide dismutase, but there is no enhanced production of superoxide (O2−). Thus, O2− appears to be involved in the initiation of chloroplast-mediated sulfite oxidation but not in propagation of the free radical chain reaction.
