ResumoPolycrystalline yttrium iron garnet Y3Fe5O12 discs were submitted to different fast-neutron irradiation doses and then were investigated by Mössbauer spectroscopy. An amorphization estimated at ≈20% in volume is observed on the highly irradiated sample; in this case, the hyperfine parameters, in particular the hyperfine field, are affected by the disorder originated by neutrons damage. Moreover, the number of [FeO4] tetrahedra is strongly reduced while that of [FeO6] octahedra remains approximately the same. Finally, one cannot conclude to a presence of Fe2+ from such a Mössbauer investigation.
